Transit of Venus

Captured this image of the transit of Venus today across the sun just before sunset. “For the last time in 105 years, Earthlings and astronauts watched the planet Venus creep across the surface of the sun during a nearly seven-hour transit.”

I took this at 7:04 PM Sedona, AZ time with my Nikon D7000 using a neutral density filter on a 300mm lens; f40 1/8000 (-5)

Solar Eclipse from Sedona

These photos are of the Solar eclipse on Sunday, May 20th. The eclipse could only be viewed as a partial eclipse from Sedona. The photos are of a progression from around 5:30 pm MT until just before sunset at around 7:05 pm MT. The maximum eclipse was at 6:35 pm. MT. Shortly after that I happened to turn around to see an ethereal sight of shadows from the tree in our yard on the neighbors house. Note how the shadows depict the eclipse. It was very surreal.

Super Moon!

The biggest and brightest full moon of the year arrived Saturday May 5th, as our celestial neighbor passed closer to Earth than usual.

Saturday’s event was a “supermoon,” the closest and therefore the biggest and brightest full moon of the year. At 11:34 p.m., the moon was about 221,802 miles from Earth. That’s about 15,300 miles closer than average. That proximity makes the moon appear about 14% bigger than it would if the moon were at its farthest distance.

The moon photo rising over Bell Rock was taken at 7:45 pm from the Yavapai Point Trail south of Rt 179 near the Village of Oak Creek. The other night sky shots were taken from the Bell Rock Trail facing southwest with views of Castle Rock, Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte. The bright “star” is Venus.
